Dental Checkup

What happens during a dental checkup?

First, Dr. Perez and his dedicated dental staff ask basic questions about your medical history. This is the perfect time to talk about any dental problems you’ve recently experienced. You must also let Dr. Perez know if you’re taking new medications.

Once you’ve discussed your medical history, Dr. Perez examines your teeth with X-ray images to check for signs of tooth decay, impacted teeth, gum disease, bruxism (teeth grinding), and more. The exam includes a panoramic X-ray for proper diagnosis of the anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth as well as a bite-wing X-ray series that checks for decay in the back of your mouth.

Next, Dr. Perez starts your dental cleaning to remove tartar and plaque buildup on and between your teeth. After cleaning, he uses special tools to measure the depth of the small space between your teeth and gums. If they are no longer shallow, you may be showing early signs of gum disease. In that case, further treatment may be necessary to keep your mouth healthy.

Before the checkup ends, Dr. Perez uses a small metal probe and mirror to check for gum inflammation, redness, or mouth sores on your gums or inside your cheeks. He also examines your face and neck, looking for signs of oral cancer.

Finally, Dr. Perez polishes your teeth to get rid of any missed plaque. This also smoothes the surface of your teeth, making it difficult for new plaque and bacteria to collect in the future.

How can I take care of my teeth between dental checkups?

The best way to care for your teeth in between checkups is to stay diligent about your oral health. Brush and floss at least twice a day to keep plaque and harmful bacteria at bay. A gentle, fluoride-based mouthwash can also help prevent new cavities, slow tooth erosion, and fight gum disease. If you’re sensitive to cavities, a low-sugar diet also helps protect your tooth health.

While biannual checkups are crucial to your oral health, it’s important to contact Dr. Perez if you experience any sudden dental problems, such as tooth pain, gum inflammation, or facial swelling. Call Impressive Smiles Tampa or book an appointment online to learn more.
