What are dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic teeth designed to replace missing teeth in your mouth. Without a full set of teeth, your cheeks can take on a hollow appearance. This happens because your teeth play an active role in preserving your face shape. Because they look and function just like your natural teeth, dentures restore your ability to chew and speak with ease.

Do I have denture options?

Dr. Perez offers two types of dentures at Impressive Smiles Tampa:

Complete dentures

Also called conventional dentures, complete dentures replace all the teeth in your mouth. They are attached to a pink acrylic base that looks identical to your gums and the roof of your mouth to look as natural as possible. Dentures are custom-made, so they comfortably sit on your gums.

Partial dentures

If you still have plenty of healthy teeth left in your mouth, you can preserve them and replace your missing teeth with partial dentures. Unlike conventional dentures, partial dentures rest on a metal framework, though they still attach to a gum-colored base. Partial dentures are removable, so you can regularly clean your teeth and gums.

How does the denture process work?

If you have any severely decayed teeth, Dr. Perez must extract them first. At your next appointment, he takes highly accurate impressions of your mouth to serve as models for your dentures. Throughout the process, Dr. Perez gives you different models to try on while he determines the right shape, fit, and color for your unique smile.

Poor-fitting dentures lead to a wide range of complications, such as gum inflammation, difficulty chewing, and speech problems, so it’s important to perfect the fit before your final denture is cast. After the lab fabricates your custom-made dentures, Dr. Perez makes additional adjustments as needed to make sure they fit properly.

Dentures take some time to get used to, especially if you’ve never worn them before. Sore gums and minor irritation are perfectly normal, and these problems will subside over the coming weeks.

If you have missing teeth, dentures can help restore your confidence, smile, and ability to chew without pain. Call Impressive Smiles Tampa or schedule an appointment online for more information.
