Teeth Whitening

Why are my teeth yellow?

Even the most diligent brusher and flosser can struggle with stained, yellow teeth. Some of the most common reasons for tooth discoloration include:

Diet

Tooth-staining foods and beverages such as red wine, coffee, tea, dark berries, and soy sauce stick to your teeth and discolor your enamel.

Age

As you get older, your enamel naturally wears away, exposing the dark dentin underneath.

Tobacco use

Cigarettes and chewing tobacco contain tar and nicotine and stain your teeth and turn them yellow or brown.

Medications

Certain medications, such as those that treat high blood pressure, anti-psychotics, and tetracycline and doxycycline, darken teeth over time.

Dental hygiene

Poor dental hygiene causes bacteria and plaque buildup, which causes tooth discoloration.

Genetics

Some people simply have thicker and brighter tooth enamel than others.

How does in-office teeth whitening work?

While OTC whitening toothpaste, strips, and rinses help remove light surface stains, they’re not nearly as effective as professional treatments. In-office treatments penetrate your enamel to brighten your smile from the inside out.

If you decide that in-office whitening is right for you, Dr. Perez coats your teeth in a carbamide or hydrogen peroxide base, both of which help break up stubborn yellow stains. He then uses heat, light therapy, or a combination of both to activate the solution.

The entire in-office whitening process takes anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the condition of your teeth. Unlike alternative options, the results are dramatic and immediate. In some cases, your teeth can brighten by up to eight shades in a single visit.

How do take-home whitening trays work?

If you want to brighten your smile on your own time, a professional take-home whitening kit is the most effective treatment available. Like in-office whitening, take-home kits contain a carbamide or hydrogen peroxide solution that breaks up dark tooth stains.

What sets take-home trays apart from OTC whitening kits is that they are custom-made for you, so they can brighten every groove of your teeth without wasting any of the stain-fighting solution.

First, Dr. Perez takes impressions of your teeth and sends them off to the lab for fabrication. Once your custom-fit trays are ready, he shows you how to use them and tells you how long to wear them for each night.

Most take-home trays should be worn for approximately one hour each day, for one to two weeks. Before putting them on, make sure to brush and floss your teeth to ensure the treatment is as effective as possible.
